Breeding and rearing puppies is very time consuming and involves a lot of dedication and I have found that I absolutely love it. It all starts when the bitch comes into season, then finding the correct male for her. A lot of factors have to be taken into consideration like hip and elbow scores and PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) testing. PRA is an eye disease which can cause your dog to start going blind from the age of around 4 years, so it is important to make sure that you do not breed 2 carriers together. And last but not least the male needs to have good breeding.
Approximately 21 days after mating the bitch can be scanned to see if she is in pup and you can also get a rough idea of how many pups there will be. If she is in pup then she needs to be fed on certain foods to ensure the healthy growth of her babies and good lactation once they are born.
I can hardly wait for the pups to arrive. I have a whelping box set up in the house for the bitch and her pups and I live in the room next door to her. I stay with her during the whole birthing process and anticipate the sex and the colour of the pup. Pups are weighed at birth and every week thereafter to watch their progress. Pups usually weigh between 400g and 500g at birth, depending on the size of the litter. The mother and her babies stay inside until they are 4 weeks old. From 3 to 4 weeks of age the pups will start getting fed solid food and from 6 to 7 weeks of age the bitch will wean the pups from drinking from her.
After lots of love and continuous attention from humans and the other dogs the pups are ready to go to their new homes.
I love all my dogs and they are part of our family on a daily basis and I do absolutely love breeding strong, healthy, happy and beautiful puppies.
